Swedish Minister for Cooperation and International Development Isabella Lövin visited NCF financed project in Bolivia

03.11.2015

The Minister met with community leaders to hear about adaptation strategies

On 12 October, the Swedish Minister for Cooperation and International Development Isabella Lövin visited Cebollullo town outside of La Paz in Bolivia. The town depends on water from the rapidly melting glacier on the nearby Illimani mountain. Minister Lövin came to meet with villagers and learn about the outcomes and achievements of the project.

The aim of the “Adapting to Climate Change in Bolivian Andean Communities Depending on Tropical Glaciers” project was to develop a participatory and differentiated strategy of adaptation to the effects of climate change in the Bolivian highlands. The project deals with the melting of tropical glaciers in the Sajama National Park as well as the Mururata and Illimani glaciers. The residents of the municipalities of Turco, Curahuara de Carangas and Palca are vulnerable to climate change, since they are dependent on water resources from the glaciers.

Minister Lövin had the chance to talk to community leaders. Lövin was especially delighted with the dialogue with a group of women leaders continuing efforts towards adaptation, as part of the social, politic and environmental sustainability strategy of the project.

During the visit, Minister Lövin was escorted by staff from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sweden and the Swedish Embassy in Bolivia. Minister Lövin was also accompanied by representatives from the partner organisations of the project, Agua Sustentable and Diakonia Latin America.
