African Union Commissioner visits NDF

1 June - NDF hosted Dr. Abou-Zeid, Commissioner for Infrastructure, Energy, ICT and Tourism at the African Union Commission for discussions on climate change, energy and infrastructure initiatives in Africa.

The Energy and Infrastructure Commissioner, Dr Amani Abou-Zeid, from the African Union Commission in Addis Ababa visited NDF on 1 June together with representatives of the Finnish Ministry of foreign Affairs. The purpose of the visit was to discuss climate change, energy and infrastructure initiatives in Africa.

Dr. Abou-Zeid spoke about the reform process the African Union has embarked on to make the organisation sustainable and more efficient to improve the lives of people and the integration of the continent. Discussions focused on concrete opportunities for collaboration in areas including climate-resilient transport, infrastructure development and renewable energy. There is already coordination between the African Union Commission and NDF through the Geothermal Exploration Project and the new Africa Climate Resilient Investment Facility (AFRI-RES).

Dr Abou-Zeid, from Egypt, is an international social and economic development expert with more than 30 years’ experience, mainly in international development organisations. She was elected Commissioner for Infrastructure, Energy, ICT and Tourism at the African Union Commission in January 2017. Previously, she served as Director for Natural Resources Management, Resident Representative in Morocco and as Lead Expert for Infrastructure, Private Sector Development and Regional Integration at the African Development Bank (AfDB).

The AFRI-RES initiative aims to strengthen the capacity of African institutions (including national governments, river basin organisations, regional economic communities, power pools, and others) and private sector to plan, design, and implement investments in selected sectors, so as to increase their resilience to climate change.
