NDF is financing a part of the Rural Roads Improvement Project II, which aims to rehabilitate roads across nine provinces in Cambodia. The improved roads are expected to provide a safe, climate-resilient and cost-effective rural road network giving these poor rural provinces all-year access to markets, jobs and social services.

NDF will specifically finance adaptation activities on the Mekong river islands using a multi sectoral approach. This means, focus is not only on rehabilitating roads and jetties and climate-proofing them, but also providing tools so that the island communities become overall less vulnerable to climate change. The pilot aims to attack the problems and the consequences of climate change in multiple ways, incorporating several sectors, to reduce vulnerability and also alleviate poverty and improve lives.

The lessons learned from this pilot will be gathered to develop an inclusive growth strategy for rural roads and if successful the approach can then be replicated in rural areas elsewhere in Cambodia and regionally where similar vulnerabilities are identified.
