Geothermal: Solution to Africa’s Energy Needs
The fifth African Rift Geothermal Conference (ARGeo-C5) is currently ongoing in Arusha, Tanzania, 29-31 October 2014.
The theme of this year’s conference is Geothermal: Solution to Africa’s Energy Needs. The conference provides a platform to explore solutions how to: mitigate the risks associated with resource exploration, attract private developers to fast track geothermal development, reduce lead times in developing geothermal projects, leverage investment to stimulate the growth of industry, and effectively develop, construct, and operate successful geothermal power plants. The conference, attended by around 500 participants, has brought together policy makers, technical experts as well as developers and financiers of international and regional delegates.
NDF is sponsoring the conferences through the financing of a short course in drilling technology options together with ICEIDA under the Geothermal Exploration Project (C48).
During the conference, NDF has had several discussions with development partners such as ICEIDA, UNEP, AUC, DFID, KfW, Power Africa etc. as well as African Rift Valley country representatives to discuss what role the NDF/ICEIDA funded Geothermal Exploration Project could play for geothermal development in Africa.
The Government of the United Republic of Tanzania is hosting and organising ARGeo –C5 in partnership with United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The ARGeo project is a Global Environment Fund (GEF) -funded project being implemented by UNEP.
