Smart solutions improve avocado farmers’ lives in Ethiopia

03.10.2022

As the climate change brings increasing challenges to smallholder farmers, innovative solutions are in high demand. These solutions are tested in projects focusing on Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) practices that can help smallholders increase their productivity and resilience to climate change, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increase soil carbon sequestration.

Nordic Development Fund, through its Nordic Climate Facility, provides financing to pilot new ideas on climate adaptation, that can help also farmers in their activities. Today, we are taking you to Ethiopia to get inspired by new technologies and their impact on agriculture.

Farmforce, a SaaS agri-tech company from Norway, provides cloud-based web and mobile solutions to enable the traceability in a food’s first mile and information on food sourcing operations during the first steps of the supply chain. The technology helps nearly 800,000 smallholders today in multiple countries.

In Ethiopia, Farmforce has partnered up with Sunvado, a branch of Tradin Organic, supporting the local avocado farmers. Sunvado has provided more than 75,000 avocado seedlings to more than 3,000 organic farmers and trains staff to create digital farmer profiles with the objective to implement more CSA practices amongst the farmers.

“Farmforce App is easy to use, available in local languages and works even offline. It is designed to work anywhere in the world, also in remote places, where climate smart agriculture can really make a difference”, says Sigrid Blomquist from Farmforce.

This project contributes to climate-resilience through adaption of CSA practices, transparent supply chains that will enable farmers to adjust to changing climate circumstances, and increased income and food security.
